Summer Intern, ChangeLab Solutions – Oakland, CA

ChangeLab Solutions seeks Legal Interns for the summer of 2016. The position is open to current first- and second-year law students who are able to work at least 35 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. (There may be an opportunity to extend summer work into the school year.)

Position Description The Legal Intern will support our dynamic team of planners, policy analysts, attorneys, and public health experts who develop innovative solutions to critical public health challenges. Legal Interns will work across a range of policy areas including healthy eating, active living, healthy housing, sustainable communities and tobacco control, and will gain experience in a wide range of issues that impact the communities and institutions in which we live, work, play, and learn.

Duties & Responsibilities Projects and activities may include any or all of the following:

  • Legal research, writing, and assisting with development of model legislation;
  • Researching and writing on a variety of cutting-edge public health legal and policy issues;
  • Assisting program staff with providing technical assistance to advocates in the field;
  • Crafting clear, easy-to-read fact sheets, technical assistance responses, and other written resources for ChangeLab Solutions’ audience;
  • Cite checking;
  • Attending meetings or other events with program staff; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current first- or second-year law student.
  • Excellent research, analytic, and writing skills.
  • Cite checking experience.
  • Able to translate complex ideas into writing accessible to a lay audience.
  • Well organized and detail oriented.
  • Preferred candidates will have demonstrated interest or experience in one or more of the following subject areas: municipal law, constitutional law, public health, public policy, health equity, tobacco control, healthy housing, food systems, active living, land use, transportation, economic development, climate change, sustainability, and/or other related subjects in the context of chronic disease prevention policies.

Compensation There will be a limited number of paid internships available. We strongly encourage applications from law students who will receive academic credit or otherwise use the position in fulfillment of requirements leading up to their degree. We also welcome applications from law students who will receive funding for the work through a law school or other institution.
